Humility Training

Douglas Adams (of Hitchhiker’s Guide fame) said it best:

Space is big. You just won’t believe how vastly, hugely, mind-bogglingly big it is. I mean, you may think it’s a long way down the road to the chemist, but that’s just peanuts to space.

Chemist, by the way, is a drug store. Anyway…

The Bible tells us (Psalm 19:1) that:

The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.

Indeed. Psalm 8 makes this observation:

When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers,
the moon and the stars, which you have set in place,
what is man that you are mindful of him,
and the son of man that you care for him?
….
O Lord, our Lord,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!

Lately, I’ve been giving these ideas a lot of thought, and I am staggered at God’s amazing creativity, immensity, and glory. The very bigness of space ought to remove our hubris and remind us of how very fragile, vulnerable, and not-in-control we are.

Consider that, then, as you look at this.

Keep in mind that God didn’t need to do this. Consider it a reflection of his holiness, and a gift for us to enjoy and appreciate. Again, I am humbled at his grace.

You reading data are much happy

Ah, yes, a senseless title. I’ve been regaled of late with sp4m comments, mostly from f1nancia| service, i11ega1 musik d0wnl0ads, and the like. While they are often annoying, they are occasionally entertaining, such as this one:

Thanks for greatest report as to Happy New Year nearly all readers thought this are very good for neally all people who do enjoy such very good data.

Really? When you read my posts, do you ever think “oh, what very good data.” Probably not. It’s hard for me to think that anyone looks at this a) as data, or b) as very good.

In any case, enjoy your data, and in the words of that old Irish blessing:

May the pavement jump up against you. May air movement be present in your hindquarters. May the nearest star cook your face. Until we see one another and run together in welcome, vaya con Dios.

I have a veritable constellation of employers. One of the two or three main organizations where I serve, Christian Student Fellowship, is holding an open house. This excellent ministry serves the University of Minnesota, primarily on the St. Paul campus.

CSF is looking to increase the people and churches who pray for and support this ministry. If you plan to be in St. Paul during January, we’d love to see you. Here’s the detail on the open house from the CSF website.
