Another Geek Merit Badge
Thursday, April 2nd, 2009I just got my new laptop, and in the process, moved up a level in the geek hierarchy.
For several months, I have been using an abandoned corporate laptop, and I had loaded Linux onto it. That laptop suddenly quit working (but not before I backed up my files, whew!).
About ten days ago, I ordered a new laptop with Ubuntu Linux preinstalled. It’s a good system–fast, and so far, reliable. It connects flawlessly with my mixed-system network, but the battery-life is not what I had hoped for.
My gripe–it’s very difficult to buy any system with no operating system. This means that no matter what I buy, I generally have to pay the “Microsoft Tax.” In other words, I have to pay for a Windows operating system that I do not want and will not use. I’ve argued for some time that Microsoft is in trouble–and systems like this make Gates and company all the more vulnerable. All of those reasons, and I was pleased to find this system.
Yes, I am a geek.
